Opportunity:
More and more kids are becoming obese simply because parents aren't making them exercise like they used to.
- The who: children and teens
- The what: Victims of obesity
- The why: These kids are having more health problems such as diabetes, and high blood pressure because of their weight
Testing the who: Other countries don't have this problem like the U.S does, and if they do have kids their numbers are a lot lower than ours. In 2017 Denmark's obese rate was about 10% whereas ours was 31%. So I would say other countries could work on it but at the moment we're the ones in need of a change.
Testing the what: Doing this you would just examine what these kids are doing, are they playing games 24/7? Are the kids who are obese doing things different than the kids who are at a healthy weight?
Testing the why: Why is America on such a different scale than any other country in the obesity department. What is everyone else doing that we need to start doing? This is becoming a serious health issue so we need to get to the bottom of it.
Interview 1: In this interview I learned that in fact this child plays way to much video games and doesn't play outside enough as well as he doesn't eat well. When describing his daily routine he didn't have any fruits or vegetables in his diet and told me the only outside time he gets is when he has recess at school 2 or 3 times a week. He doesn't play any sports, and when he gets home from school and is done with his homework he plays video games until dinner, then bed time.
Interview 2: In this interview this little girl did indeed exercise year round and she tried to eat somewhat healthy. Her parents have done an excellent job with trying to eat healthy, but unfortunately her genetics are not in her favor. It's hard for her to stay at a good weight because of that.
Interview 3: In this interview this lady has always been obese until the last couple years. She stated how losing the weight was one of the hardest things she's ever done. She always was on the heavy side but she was on the verge of becoming diabetic because of it so she's made a change. She says she still fights with herself on the daily basis but it's worth it in the end.
Interview 4: In this interview I interview a man that is still overweight well in his 40's and he says it's too late for him to make a change in his life so he has come to terms with his weight. He now has high blood pressure and diabetes, his family encourages him to change his lifestyle but he is convinced it's too late and not worth it.
Interview 5: In this interview this little boy exercise's all the time and is just a couple pounds away from not being obese, he is aware of his situation and is on a mission to become a healthy weight. He goes out of his way to eat vegetables and tries to eat as healthy as he can. Some of his family members have died because of the medical problems associated with obesity and he doesn't want to be on that track.
Summary: The main takeaway I got from this exercise was that obesity is a sensitive topic and it's crazy to me that kids have to worry about this. Talking to such young kids and seeing them have to worry about this disease was crazy to me, I've never had to deal with it so I never really thought about it until. This affected some of their lives more than anybody could imagine and it's sad that people have to deal with it. On the other hand you have some parents who just think it's easier to feed their kids fast food and stick them in front of a TV and they are going to have a rude awakening when they get older, but the worst part is it's not even their fault, they don't know any better
Hi Jaycie,
ReplyDeleteObesity is a problem in American that most people face and can lead to serious health issues. I agree with you that kids are not getting enough exercise and not eating the right diet. Currently, elementary and middle school offers recess and p.e. to get students to exercise. However, from my experience students get to choose if they want to participate or not. I remember in elementary school I would be the kid that sits under the tree during p.e. however my coach would always tell me that I have talent in sports. I remember the only grade in p.e. was the gym test regards to the pacer, situp, pushup, etc. and I would be one of the few students that make it to the end. I guess grades are the only thing that motivates me to exercise.
Hey Jaycie,
ReplyDeleteThis is a great issue and opportunity to talk about. Obesity is a very difficult thing to overcome, and it isn't like other diseases that you don't have to worry about after recovering. It is a constant worry, and your weight will constantly change over the course of your life. It's also a lot more difficult to lose the weight than to gain it in most circumstances. It surprised me that people are now conscious of their weight so early on in their lives. It shouldn't be something children should worry about, but the food and culture surrounding us has led to this. I still struggle to eat healthy, and I'd love to see a change in our food culture to make it easier to find quick and healthy options. Great post Jaycie, very thought-provoking.
Jaycie, I think the issue you've brought up is great, seeing as though it is beginning to impact more and more children. I see it firsthand all the time, but mostly in tourist attractions like Disney or Six Flags where families go to eat and have fun, you often see families where most of the adults and the children are overweight/obese and it is a habit that is really hard to break. The food industry and especially the fast-food industry have a huge influence on Americans via commercials, signage, deals, and happy hours its hard to distance yourself from the unhealthy eating habits that are everywhere.
ReplyDeleteHey Jaycie,
ReplyDeleteThe issue you talked about is certainly a very important one and is one that needs more awareness in our fast paced society where people are eating fast food more than ever. Many would obviously like to be healthy as you can tell from some of your interviews, but a big problem is those who give up and feel hopeless like that one man you interviewed. If one can help those people as well it'd make a great difference in our country.
