Assignment 11. Idea Napkin 1

1) You. Who you are. What your talents are. What your skills and experiences are. Also: what are your aspirations? Specifically regarding your business concept, how do you see this business (if you were to start it) playing a role in your life?
My name is Jaycie Wegner, I am a Junior at UF and I'm majoring in sports management. My talents are multitasking, public speaking, and I'm great with people (I'm a server, and on a project team for the UAA so I work with people on a daily basis) I have never had a problem with my weight but people in my family have and I hate the way it makes them feel, let alone how unhealthy it makes them. I want to help people figure out a way to live a longer life so they can enjoy minute with their children and grandchildren that they deserve. This would play a huge role in my life because it affects people in my family directly.

2) What are you offering to customers? Describe the product or service (in other words, how you'll solve customers' unmet needs).
I'm offering customers an app that gives them recipes for meals to eat healthy, as well as certain workouts to do for the week to achieve goals. Along with that this app will provide people a place to talk to other people in the same circumstances as them, and if they're close enough perhaps workout together, or grab lunch together. I want these people to know they're not alone and they can have the support they need from people in the same situation as them.

3) Who are you offering it to? Describe, in as much detail as possible, the demographic and psychographic characteristics of your customers. Think especially of this question: what do your customers all have in common?
The demographic is anyone who fits the criteria it doesn't matter age or income. I imagine the psychographic characteristics of my customers are that they enjoy eating, and enjoy not working out, but that is not everyone in the category there's people who watch what they eat but just can't lose the weight. All my of customers want to lose weight and want to live a healthier life.

4) Why do they care? Your solution is only valuable insofar as customers believe its valuable to them. Here, explain why customers will actually pay you money to use your product or service.
These people care because they want to live a longer life. One of the big reasons for losing the weight is because their health is in danger, or it's going downhill. These people want to be able to see their kids get married, they want to be there when their grandchildren are born. They have chosen life and they want to live a long healthy one

5) What are your core competencies? What sets you apart from everyone else? Also: what do you have that nobody else has?
What sets me apart from everyone else is I care about each and every person that is on the app. I want these people to succeed and if they aren't I'm there to figure out why and help. I will also get in touch with everyone on my app once a month to see their progress and how they're doing, I want to have a relationship with all of my customers.

I believe all of these elements work together and when they work together perfectly that's when the success of the business will come. These are all little parts of the company and when all the parts fit together you're in good shape.

Assignment 9. Testing the Hypothesis

Who: Through my interviews I found that there is many people who fall outside of this market. I've talked to many people around the country and there doesn't seem to be a trend to where exactly people who are obese live, they're spread out. I've noticed that the schools who serve unhealthy breakfast and lunches have more kids who seem to be over weight.

What: This need differs from many, for instance when I was little before I would hit a growth spurt I would get a little chubby, that's how you knew and after a couple months I would shoot up and not have that fat anymore, so for kids how do we know this is not what they're doing? They go through so many phases it's often hard to tell. Now adults on the other hand don't go through growth spurts like children do, so they're a different story. This is why I interviewed a wide variety of people with different backgrounds.

Why: The need of the outsiders is different because they don't have any of the issues the insider has, they don't have to worry about everything they put in their body because it doesn't effect them like it does the people inside the boundary. I also interviewed people who were not obese to see their outlook on eating the right things and exercising and they have different outlooks because they simply don't have to worry about gaining or losing the weight like the people inside the boundary do.

Inside the boundary
Who: People who are obese
What: The need is to get healthy/lose weight
Why: This need exists because too many people are having healthy issues because of their weight.

Outside the boundary:
Who: Anyone who is at a "healthy weight" or any who is "skinny"
What: The need is not to get healthy/lose weight
Why: Sometimes people care more about living their life than living a healthy life, but they don't realize it until it's to late.

Assignment 8. Solving the problem

My problem has to do with more and more people are becoming obese nowadays especially children. I have a couple solutions for this situation, my first is to have a "support group" for anyone who is interested but in this group you exercise and have meal prep ideas so not only are you getting the exercise you need but you're also eating right. Within this group you can create a app that lets you do any of it at home or from anywhere in the country so if people aren't able to make it to a session they can what workouts are being done for the week and also all the recipes for that week as well. The main point of the group is so that people know they're not alone, and together they can conquer this disease. Another idea and this one is pointing more towards children is to create healthy meals for them to eat at school so even if they aren't eating healthy at home they are at least eating right at school. Also they need to incorporate more recess and gym in schools, my sister doesn't have gym this year because she has to take other classes instead, which don't get me wrong I'm sure those classes are important but so is gym. Children need their exercise not only to get their energy out but also to be healthy!

Assignment 7. Test Hypothesis

Children becoming obese
Opportunity:
More and more kids are becoming obese simply because parents aren't making them exercise like they used to.

  • The who: children and teens
  • The what: Victims of obesity
  • The why: These kids are having more health problems such as diabetes, and high blood pressure because of their weight
Testing the who: Other countries don't have this problem like the U.S does, and if they do have kids their numbers are a lot lower than ours. In 2017 Denmark's obese rate was about 10% whereas ours was 31%. So I would say other countries could work on it but at the moment we're the ones in need of a change.
Testing the what: Doing this you would just examine what these kids are doing, are they playing games 24/7? Are the kids who are obese doing things different than the kids who are at a healthy weight?
Testing the why: Why is America on such a different scale than any other country in the obesity department. What is everyone else doing that we need to start doing? This is becoming a serious health issue so we need to get to the bottom of it.

Interview 1: In this interview I learned that in fact this child plays way to much video games and doesn't play outside enough as well as he doesn't eat well. When describing his daily routine he didn't have any fruits or vegetables in his diet and told me the only outside time he gets is when he has recess at school 2 or 3 times a week. He doesn't play any sports, and when he gets home from school and is done with his homework he plays video games until dinner, then bed time.
Interview 2: In this interview this little girl did indeed exercise year round and she tried to eat somewhat healthy. Her parents have done an excellent job with trying to eat healthy, but unfortunately her genetics are not in her favor. It's hard for her to stay at a good weight because of that.

Interview 3: In this interview this lady has always been obese until the last couple years. She stated how losing the weight was one of the hardest things she's ever done. She always was on the heavy side but she was on the verge of becoming diabetic because of it so she's made a change. She says she still fights with herself on the daily basis but it's worth it in the end.

Interview 4: In this interview I interview a man that is still overweight well in his 40's and he says it's too late for him to make a change in his life so he has come to terms with his weight. He now has high blood pressure and diabetes, his family encourages him to change his lifestyle but he is convinced it's too late and not worth it.

Interview 5: In this interview this little boy exercise's all the time and is just a couple pounds away from not being obese, he is aware of his situation and is on a mission to become a healthy weight. He goes out of his way to eat vegetables and tries to eat as healthy as he can. Some of his family members have died because of the medical problems associated with obesity and he doesn't want to be on that track.

Summary: The main takeaway I got from this exercise was that obesity is a sensitive topic and it's crazy to me that kids have to worry about this. Talking to such young kids and seeing them have to worry about this disease was crazy to me, I've never had to deal with it so I never really thought about it until. This affected some of their lives more than anybody could imagine and it's sad that people have to deal with it. On the other hand you have some parents who just think it's easier to feed their kids fast food and stick them in front of a TV and they are going to have a rude awakening when they get older, but the worst part is it's not even their fault, they don't know any better

Assignment 6. Identifying Opportunity identification

Economic trend: Baby Boomers Aren't Retiring
  • https://www.thebalance.com/top-usa-future-economic-trends-3305666
  • This is an opportunity for the Millennial's so they can realize that they do want to retire at a decent age or even an early age. To thrive right now baby boomers have to have multiple incomes, but if Millennial's can figure it out they won't have to do that when it's time for them to retire. The customer they're targeting is the Millennial's because it's almost too late for the baby boomers. I believe this opportunity is easy if you start it right, start when you're young and get in the habit of having a 401 K it'll be easier in the long run.
  • I believe I saw this opportunity because I know so many people in my life that should be retired by their age but they simply can't because they can't make it money wise. There is always a way to make money I believe you just have to figure out how you can make money fast, or how you can make money doing what you love. It's your choice.
Economic trend: Climate Change Is Causing More Natural Disasters'
  • This is an opportunity for anyone who is willing to help. This earth affects everyone, so we should all take care of it. I would say younger generations have more of an opportunity to help because ideally they'll be on this earth longer but that doesn't mean the older generations can't pitch in and help.
  • I saw this opportunity because this problem is getting so large something needs to be done about it. Companies are getting better with switching from plastic straws to paper but we need to push  getting rid of plastic more. I work as a server and so many straws just get thrown out without anybody even touching them, and the turtles are the ones suffering because of our choices.
Regulatory trend: Net Neutrality
  • https://seekingalpha.com/article/4130645-3-potential-regulatory-changes-may-affect-telecom
  • This is an opportunity for anyone who has access to the internet. Net Neutrality basically says that the internet service providers should treat all internet communications equally.and not charged extra for certain websites, or platforms.
  • I saw this opportunity because now a days most people can't live without internet so it's becoming a huge part of everyone's life. Net neutrality essentially will have an impact on everyone using it, if they start charging for every little thing
Regulatory trend: More Aggressive Copper Retirement Rules
  • https://seekingalpha.com/article/4130645-3-potential-regulatory-changes-may-affect-telecom
  • This is an opportunity for people retiring in these companies such as Verizon and AT&T. When having these people retire within 90 days instead of 180 makes it easier on the company plus it saves them money in the long run so it seems like a win win for everyone.
  • I saw this opportunity because I've known some people who have run into this problem and although it doesn't affect everyone, it is a problem that needs to be faced and fixed.

All these reports are from UF campus, my guess is there's tons of students off campus getting assaulted by these same people but just haven't said anything about it. • The problem: The problem is students are getting sexually assaulted on campus all the time and very few things are being done about it. They have been sending alerts out but more needs to be done than that.

The school notified the police and medial services when they figured out what was going on. The kids went to the ER but everyone ended up okay.
  • The problem: The problem is these kids could've had really bad side effects from these candies. Also the school could get in trouble because it happened on their property, yes they didn't provide it but I'm sure they could still have a lawsuit on their hands one way or another.
  • The people: The parents of the students, the school.

Woman, 94, dies after being hit by vehicle in KFC parking lot by Tarik Minor
  • https://www.news4jax.com/news/local/jacksonville/woman-94-dies-after-being-hit-by-car-in-kfc-parking-lot-friends-say

She complained of pain in her shoulder after the incident. They took her to UF Health hospital where she passed away the next day.
  • The problem: The problem is people need to pay more attention when driving. I'm sure that person who hit Mrs. Long didn't mean too but we're all guilty of not paying enough attention when we're driving especially in parking lots.
  • The people: anyone who has a license

Assignment 4. Forming an Opportunity Belief

I believe there is an unmet need with homeless houses. This applies to all the homeless people to stand on 13th and university , or stand off the highway asking for money.  My plan would be to talk to churches in the area and see if they would be interested in partnering up and buying a house for just homeless people so they could have a safe place to go without begging people for money until they can get back on their feet. I also believe that police officers need to start enforcing no panhandling. If they know they can't stand on the corners asking for money it would give them a reason to get their lives together.

Interviews:
Christine: Christine lives in a house near university and always has homeless people walking around asking for money. When Christine walks home at night she is often frightened because she never knows what they'll say or do. She has caught one panhandler in particular walk through her yard many times looking for things or trash he can pick up to sell for what I'm guessing is drugs. The other day one guy came up to her at Publix and asked for 40 cents and when she said she didn't have any money to give his response was "F*ck you, how do you not have 40 cents" and then perceived to shoot her her a bird. These homeless get upset when they don't get their way and its scary.

Sharon: Sharon is actually a homeless person. She says she just got herself into a mess and can't seem to get herself out, so she asks people for money or for anything they'll give her. Sharon says that she doesn't see another way out of her situation unless she gets help from other people. I told her my plan for houses for the homeless, and she thought it was a great idea. She told me she wants the best for people and she doesn't want to scare or hurt anybody she just needs some help.

Brittney: I talked to Brittney who is also a victim of homeless people asking her for things. Brittney says she has never come into a good situation with any homeless person. She says they're always so hostile and rude to begin with and she says she has even be insulted by a homeless saying "you're just a privileged girl, you don't know what you're talking about." She has never had given homeless people any more or anything like that but she says she would love to see them get help!

Reflection:
As I took a step back and interviewed not only homeless people but people who are affected by homeless people it honestly breaks my heart, yes most of them do this to themselves, but it makes me want to get out there and talk with organizations and churches to see if there is a way these people can be helped. They might be rude and offensive sometimes but nobody deserves to live like that.

Summary: My opportunity is absolutely still there it just needs someone to start it. I believe my opportunity is about the same as I started but I feel the need to go out and make it happen, it would be awesome to see these homeless people off the streets, even if it's just giving 1 homeless person a home it would be worth it. I believe entrepreneurs should adapt to customer feedback because essentially the customers are the ones keeping them in business
